Federal Election 2007

A Federal election for both houses of parliament will be held on Saturday November 24th, 2007. The Australian Democrats have a proud history of being a moderating voice in government, negotiating with major parties through constant legislative amendment the best outcomes for all Australians. Regardless of how Australians voted in their House of Representatives (the lower house - which is electorate based), the Federal Senate elections determine who will represent the whole of New South Wales (in the upper house). The Senate's role is to review the work of the House of Representatives, initiating inquires and conducting numerous committees that facilitate good government.

The vital work of Australian Democrats in the Federal Senate over the past 27 years has won widespread acknowledgement and recognition as defenders of our worldly democracy within government, as well as our statutory and democratic institutions, security services, public service, non-government organizations, universities and other educational institutions, and the media. The Democrats work tirelessly to bring the government to account, keep government processes and decision-making open, and provide checks and balances to uphold freedom and diversity in Australia.

Since 2005 the Coalition government has dominated both houses of parliament, and the Senate no longer functions as it was designed to do. There is little capacity to provide a legitimate check on government excesses; the majority the Coalition have in the Senate means that they can pass any bill presented without review. The number of committees too has been reduced, and the number of sitting days.

Our Australian Democrats are striving to bring back the balance they held in the Senate for 9 years, trusted and respected by all for their commitment to democratic process, and the depth of their experience in negotiating between opposing views, for public good.

At this time, more than ever, Australia needs the Democrats presence in the Federal Senate. Help elect our Senate Candidate for New South Wales, Lyn Shumack.
