DEMOCRAT SLAMS PULP MILL DECISION
6 October 2007
The Australian Democrats have condemned Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to approve the controversial $2 Billion Gunn’s Ltd pulp mill in the Tamar Valley.
“This is a spineless decision, that is only going to place further stress on the delicate ecosystem of the Tamar Valley and contribute to our growing Climate Change emergency ”, Pierce Field, the Democrat Candidate for Wentworth said today, .
The Democrats have dismissed Minister Turnbull’s claims that the approval comes with conditions which are the toughest governing any pulp mill in the world.
‘Despite the conditions imposed on the mill, the fact still remains that it will have a detrimental effect on the environment’, Field said
‘We have seen both the Howard Government and the Labor Party bend over backwards to accommodate the proposal, despite the majority of the community in Tasmania opposing it’.
‘This further proves that the two major parties are not serious on the environment. The Democrats have been fighting on these issues for thirty years, keeping the government of the day to account. A vote for me and the Democrats this election will ensure that the same pressure is applied to the incoming government’.
